Essex Road

Following the great trip around the Circle Line, Echo and I teamed up again (and took Hedgie along for the ride) to tackle some underground stations that weren’t technically classed as underground stations. The Northern City Line runs from Moorgate to Drayton Park. While Moorgate had already been pupped as part of the Circle Line, we started our journey there so Echo could get his photo in. We then worked out that if we skipped Old Street and captured Essex Road, we could then double back and get Old Street in a shorter time than if we went sequentially through the stations. So we did. It was weird being on full sized trains in tunnels that had been used by the Northern Line and were therefore former London Underground tunnels. Admittedly, they had been built as mainline tunnels to begin with and were then passed to the London Underground, but still; it felt odd. We had to pop up to the surface so I could fetch a mobile phone charging cable, which meant navigating the series of badly signposted tunnels before we found the way out via a lift. Upon our return, we were delighted to see a whole host of retro signage from the Network Southeast days, back when British Rail was a thing. Since visiting, I have learned that had we come just 4 months sooner, the whole line would have been covered in NSE signage, and apparently the original NSE station signs are still there, with the modern signs just being a vinyl overlay.

Condor enjoys the Network SouthEast leftovers, now forming part of the station’s heritage at Essex Road station.

Echo wonders if this is the way to The Only Way Is Essex at Essex Road station.
