Brading

Skipping past Sandown as we chased the train, the Great Isle of Wight adventure took us to Brading. A quaint little station which is a shadow of its former self. Originally formed of 2 platforms thanks to a passing loop, the current station is as single tracked as it can be. Once we had taken our pup shots we popped into the station building. Inside was a gift shop and tourist information centre, which we were not expecting. It was while looking around we were offered a guided tour of the now disused signal box. Knowing it would eat into the time we had at the steam railway, we thought about it for a moment before handing over our nominal fees and being escorted across the footbridge (one at a time) to the old platform. Quick spot of photography before being taken to the signal box.

The tour was excellently given with a former signalman as the tour guide. He went into details on how things worked, the processes involved in working the line, and some of the story of the restoration of the signal box. The tour even had interactive elements to it. Echo got to pull some signal levers, as did a member of another group we were on the tour with. As an added bonus, we got to go into the block underneath (which is strictly off limits on active signal boxes) and see the remaining moving parts of the signal and points workings. Lots more photos taken before it was time to be escorted over the footbridge (again, one at a time) and jump into the train so we could double back to Sandown. After 3 stations, we were finally on a train. 1938 ex-London Underground stock, repainted into the LU livery of the time.
